Regional Development Leagues - 30th November 2014

The next rounds of the Regional Development League take place on Sunday 30th November 2014 at Grangemouth and Stirling. This time our youngsters are involved at Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 age groups.

Regional Development Leagues 2014/15

The East and Central Development League is the main competition outlet for our younger players and this year we have more teams than ever in line with our aim to offer as many players the chance to get playing time to aid their development. The league gathers teams together in a central venue each month and typically each team plays 3 or 4 games. We are entering the following teams based on the numbers of players we have at each session :

Under 10s - one girls' team and one boys' team

Under 12s - one girls' team and two boys' teams

Under 14s - one girls' team and two boys' teams

We haven't entered any under 16 teams as the Club felt that at this age group the National League offered a better competition structure. We have entered teams in the National League Division 1 and 2 for both boys and girls.

The dates for the Regional Development League games have been announced as :

  • Sunday 28th September 14 (U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 26th October 14 (U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 30th November 14 (U10's, U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 14th December 14 (U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 25th January 15 (U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 22nd February 15 (U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 8th March 15 (U10's)
  • Sunday 22nd March 15 (U12's, U14's and U16's)
  • Sunday 26th April 15 (Finals)

The top two teams in the under 12 and under 14 leagues will play in the RDL finals to determine the East and Central RDL champions. These top two teams in the Under 14 league will also represent East and Central in the Under 14 National Challenge. The qualification for the Under 12 National Challenge is still to be decided but unlike previous years this will be a club based competition rather than a regional one.

There will also be an Under 10 National Challenge which will be open to all teams either as a Club, region or development group.

East and Central Regional Development League finals

Grangemouth Sports Centre on Sunday 27th April sees the culmination of the East and Central RDLs with the top two teams in each league playing each other for the league title. We are delighted that our under 12 girls and our under 16 men have both qualified for their finals and proud to say that our other teams in the RDL both just missed out, with our under 14 girls and one of the under 14 boys teams finishing in 3rd place in their leagues. There has been some confusion about the under 14 boys league as, unlike all the other leagues in this RDL, only the result in the first meeting of the teams were counted in the league with all the other times the teams met being regarded as "friendlies". We will, as ever, be contributing to the review of the RDLs at the end of the season with a view to hopefully improving this for future seasons.

Under 16 Men Final
Falkirk Fury v City of Edinburgh Kings
10:15-11:15

The under 16 men draw the short straw of the early game so let's hope the boys have an early night! Coach Mark Stevenson and his team played both their league games against Falkirk in November and lost heavily but this is a team who have improved all season and will be a much tougher team to beat now and could just cause an upset. The team is :

  • Rory Milne
  • Stuart Greathead
  • Ryan Armour
  • Ryan Ness
  • Jordan Scott
  • Fraser Black
  • Lewis Rudge
  • Finlay Rae
  • Blair Stobbart
  • Thomas O'Brien
  • Omar Shehata
  • Liam Woods

Under 12 Girls Final
East Lothian Dragons v City of Edinburgh Kats
15:00-15:30

This has been a very strong season for our under 12 girls and the icing on the cake would be the league title. Coach Janie McBrierty has been able to name her strongest side for what should be a great game against runners up, East Lothian Dragons. The players are :

  • Pollyanna Storie
  • Lucia Garland
  • Robyn Collins
  • Ellie Cochrane
  • Clara Palmer
  • Maja Majerowicz
  • Cara McManus
  • Alannah Skellett
  • Rosie Goodall
  • Kate Broadway

Weekend preview - Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd September

This weekend sees our younger players start their league games with u12s, u14s and u16 boys all in action on Sunday in the Regional Development League.

Also, the under 16 girls have a friendly against the new combined team of Stirling and West Lothian at Portobello on Saturday at 11am so come along and cheer them on!

The men's teams are involved in the Edinburgh derby with Boroughmuir Blaze at the Crags. First up are the Cadet Men at 12:20, unfortunately without Kyle Jimenez who will need another week's rest of the ankle he injured last week.

Then the Senior Men are on at 2:20 - the Men will be looking to continue their winning ways from the first week of the season after their enforced rest week due to the rescheduling of the Glasgow University game. They will also be without one of their key players as Simon Flockhart is in Florida sunning himself!

The Junior Men are decimated by illness, injury and compulsory school field trips and as such we asked Blaze for a postponement which disappointingly they refused. However on appeal, basketballscotland decided we had a case for postponement. Players will be advised of the new date for this fixture by their coach.

U12s greet visitors from Africa

The club's U12 squad were hosts to special visitors from Tanzania last week.

Wilfred Moshi reached the top of Mount Everest on 23 May 2012. He is the first Tanzanian to do so. He launched the Hand in Hand Global Vision Project from there which has involved 11 schools in Edinburgh and their partner schools in the Kilimanjaro District of Tanzania, East Africa.

Wilfred is here for a month with his family to share his experiences with all those who are part of the Twende Pamoja (translation: Let us walk together) family of friendships.

On their second day in Edinburgh they enjoyed meeting all the young people who are part the City of Edinburgh Under 12s and discovered that playing basketball crosses differences of language and culture and brings young people from across the world together.

Wilfreds two children, Martin & Martina, were presented with T shirts and basketballs at the end of the session and which will be bouncing around the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro when they return home next month.

Club players in Gothenburg‏

Some of our Club players have taken part in their first competitive games for Scotland as they travelled with the U12s and U13s to take part in a tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Sean Nealon-Lino and Alexander Ferguson played for the U13 boys and were narrowly beaten in the semi-final. Owen Mackle was playing for the U12 boys and Tia Davies and Niamh Mackle were playing for the U12 girls.

Although there was no final for the U12 competition both teams had an excellent tournament with all our players performing well. Owen also took home the free throw competition trophy with an impressive 5 from 6.

Well done to everyone!
