These will be mixed sessions (gender and age groups) as outlined below and will be a chance for different training groups to work together. The date will be organised in 2 hour slots and to help offset the hall costs, players will be asked to pay £1 per 2 hour slot, players are welcome to attend more than 1 slot although please note the last slot is only for U18s and Seniors.

East & Central Coaching Awards

Congratulations to Kara Gillies who has won the East and Central Young Coach of the Year Award and to Brian Findlay was has won this year's Special Recognition Award.

Kara Gillies: East & Central Coaching Awards - Young Coach of the Region‏

Kara has been a member of the club for over 10 years, playing at Cadette, Junior and Senior level.

She first became involved in coaching about 5 years ago, taking the Level 1 coaching award and working with the Club's Sunday Hoops and under 12 age group.

She fairly quickly moved on to her Level 2 coaching award and took over the Club's National League Cadette team, where for the last 2 years she really has found her feet as a coach and got the best out of her players.

She always produces demanding, organised, well-structured yet fun training sessions and has successfully developed several young players who are now members of the National Squad.

Well done Kara!

Brian Findlay: East & Central Coaching Awards - Regional Special Recognition Award‏

Brian has been involved in Basketball for almost 40 years, beginning from his teaching days at Castlebrae High School.

When he moved to Portobello High, he was instrumental (along with Tony Szifris) in the founding of the Kool Kats club in the late 80's.

For many years he has been the very successful Head Coach of the Kats Junior women's squad as well as assistant coach to our Senior team.

Many players, through the years, owe their success to Brian, perhaps none more so than our very own Olympian Rose Anderson.

As well as his commitment to developing the players of the future Brian works tirelessly behind the scenes at City of Edinburgh planning our fixtures and is usually one of the first on site on 'Basketball Saturdays' setting up bleachers and tables as well as sweeping the games hall floor!

Although Brian decided that last season would be his last year as a Head Coach he will still assist Ben Gunn on the Senior Women’s team.

Many congratulations to Brian from all at the Club on this well deserved award.

Welcome to Craig!

We are pleased to welcome Craig Nicol who is joining the Club as a member of our coaching team for the new season.

Craig will be assisting Jim Wright and Doug Reilly with the U18 and Senior Men's teams respectively.

For those who do not know Craig, he has many years of coaching experience, including time spent at both Falkirk Fury and Stirling Knights. He has also been involved with the Scotland Development squads at many different age group levels. For the last few years however he has been in England with the Medway Park Crusaders basketball club.

As a player, he started out at Dunfermline Reign but has most recently turned out for Stirling Knights.

We are sure everyone will make him feel very welcome.

East & Central Region Coaching Awards

The Club is pleased to announce that Steven Dickson and Janie McBrierty have both picked up East & Central Region Coaching Awards for the season 2011-12.

Steven, Head Coach for our the U16 Men, has been named Young Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile Janie, our U12s Head Coach, was awarded the prize for Young Persons' Coach of the Year.

The awards were presented at Portobello High school on Saturday 10 November by Dave Evans, the basketballscotland East & Central Regional Development Officer.

Many congratulations to both award winners.

The assistant coach will work with Head Coach Jim Wright in training, team selection and game day coaching. The Division 2 games are once a month on a Sunday and training is Tuesday and Thursday 7pm until 8.30pm.

If you are currently a player, as an assistant coach you would then be entitled to a 50% reduction in your subscription fees.

Ideally you would be at least UKCC Level 1 qualified but the Club would be willing to put you through this course if necessary. If you are interested, please email the Club email address (cityofedinburgh@gmail.com) with your details.

Only Girls Allowed Basketball - Sunday 27th May

Around 40 girls took part in the City of Edinburgh Basketball Club’s "Only Girls Allowed" basketball session on Sunday 27th May.

This was an event run in conjunction with Active Schools and basketballscotland with funding provided by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Activcity programme. The aim of the session was to get more girls involved in basketball during their primary school years.

The girls came from all over Edinburgh and were coached by some of the players from the Club. At the end of the session the girls were given a basketball to encourage them to keep practising at home and they were invited to attend the Great Britain Women’s game at Meadowbank on 9th June 2012, as guests of the Club.

The girls will also be going to cheer on the U14 Scotland girls who are playing before the GB women. A special cheer will be reserved for ex-City of Edinburgh player Rose Anderson when she takes to the court for GB.

Thanks to Janie, Sarah, Emma, Lauren, Ciara, Shannon, Holly, Katie, Liz, Finny, Kara, Niamh, Tia, Georgia, Rachael, Pollyanna and Laura for all their fantastic coaching and help. Also thanks to Derek and Paul for their assistance.

Sunday Hoops - It's Back!

Sunday Hoops is returning with new coaches and a new home.

Due to support from basketballscotland's FutureClubz initiative we are now in a position to offer a 10 Week block of Sunday Hoops at the incredible value of £10 for the block as a "welcome back" gift!

Sunday Hoops will now be based at Holy Rood High School to take advantage of the height adjustable baskets and the competitive Sunday rate! So if you have a friend or family member who is aged 8-10 years old then this will be the ideal way to introduce them to basketball.

Sunday Hoops will aim to get the basic skills in place that will enable them to move onto Under 12s and beyond.

The course will be at 10am until 11am and will run for 10 weeks between Sunday 22nd April and Sunday 24th June and is aimed at Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils, both boys and girls.

Older primary school children are welcome to attend our Under 12s sessions.
