Kings Senior Men vs. Grampian Flyers

The senior men travelled to the Robert Gordon’s University, on Saturday 23 September ‘06, to play Grampian Flyers. The team was badly depleted with Bret Jeffries and Lee Pettet unavailable, and Gary Beyer and Alan Lamb both injured. The team was only eight deep, with Bobby Cosgrove (not fully fit!), and Junior Star, Ewen Dover on the bench.

We had difficulty putting the ball in the basket in the first quarter but our defence during that phase was terrific. We conceded only 7 points and that set the tone for the rest of the game with Grampian only managing 39 points in the game; many of these in the dying minutes of the game where we finished with 5 guards on the court. We ran out 82 - 39 (?) winners (maybe more as the score sheet was inaccurate).

Chris McBrierty and Tony Hogg, last year’s rookies, stepped up and gave a very mature performance and Garreth Lodge ran the floor and contributed well to the scoring. Bobby was able to give us some respite as he began his comeback fight and Ewen showed his continued development with a confident spell. The three experienced players Kevin Anderson, Simon Flockhart and Laurie Costello showed great leadership and dominated the game. Laurie played positions 3, 4 and 5 in the game and must be wondering if he’ll get a shot at 1 this season. Kevin was always a scoring threat and negated the potential threat from the Flyers three point shooter, Duncan McAllister. Simon continues to show the form which will surely win him a full cap in the near future.
