Niall Mackle - a profile

Niall Mackle is set to captain Scotland U18s against Merseyside Tigers this weekend, so here is some background information on what it takes to be at the top of your basketball game.

Name: Niall Mackle
Height: 6’ 4”
Birth place: Edinburgh

School/Universities/Clubs played for: Edinburgh Kings, East Lothian Peregrines, North Berwick High School and North Berwick Basketball Club

International honours: Scotland U17 Men, Scotland U18 Men

When did you first start playing basketball and how did you get in to it?

I was a relatively late starter in the game as I joined North Berwick Basketball Club at 10 years but since then I have been lucky enough to go on to play for my school, town, county and country. I joined the Kings from East Lothian Peregrines in 2007.

Who were your biggest inspirations on and off the basketball court?

My biggest inspirations off court are my parents (at least that’s what they tell me!). On court every coach I’ve played for has been inspirational from Marie Caie who introduced me to the game, Sean Hume who spent many hours working with me on my shooting, Doug Reilly for his tactical expertise, Jim Wright and Alan Lamb for their banter!

What are your basketball highlights?

My main highlight has to be representing Scotland in Tel Aviv, Israel at the European Championships. Other highlights include winning the Scottish Cup twice, once as captain, and winning the league this year. Coaching at North Berwick Basketball Club for 3 years has also been enjoyable.

Looking at the big picture what are your ambitions on and off the basketball court?

Off court next year I am going to Aberdeen University to study Law, where I hope to continue playing basketball.
