The club is honoured to announce that Sandy Sutherland has agreed to accept the position of Honorary President. Sandy has had a long and distinguished history with our club as a previous secretary and chairperson.
Sandy was born Alexander Sutherland in Inverness in 1943 and brought up in Golspie. He attended Glasgow University where he gained an MA in Economics and Pyschology. Sandy was a formidable sportsman and is a former Scottish shot putt champion (1962 and 1971). In his career as a sports journalist and broadcaster he has reported on 10 Commonwealth Games, 6 Olympic Games and numerous World and European Championships in athletics and basketball!
He is currently on 4 executive Boards - BasketballScotland, Edinburgh Leisure, Commonwealth Games Scotland and Scottish Sports Aid; former President Glasgow University AC and former chair of British basketball and President of Scottish Basketball, secretary/chair of Lothian BA and amongst all of that he found time to play a huge part in the growth and success of our Club!
The sporting excellence in the Sutherland family is not restricted to Sandy. Sandy's wife Liz is a former Scottish Sportswoman of Year and former Great Britain athletics internationalist. His 3 children Joanna (Basketball manager for London 2012, Catherine (GP in Newcastle) and Malcolm (trainee paramedic with Ambulance Service in Edinburgh) all attended Portobello High School and all played basketball!
Sandy's stated ambitions are to report on both British basketball teams (and athletics) at London 2012; to re-establish professional basketball teams in Edinburgh (preferably at a proper arena!) and to break 80 in a golf medal!!!
We are delighted to welcome someone of Sandy's pedigree to the post of Honorary President and feel sure that in this position he will help the Club to continue to grow and develop.
